I'm not your typical trainer. My primary focus is creating a custom approach for each dog rather than promoting one particular method.

My Story

My name is Claire Sanders, and I'm a dog trainer in Oregon serving the Eugene/Springfield area. I've been a passionate animal lover since childhood. My love for dogs was like an innate instinct and I pursued my dream of owning a dog despite my family being allergic. When I was 16 I adopted a little Terrier/Chihuahua/Australian Shepherd mix named Black Jack.

Black Jack became my inspiration and my teacher and he has shaped my dog training path. He came to me with severe separation anxiety which I was determined to find a cure for. After years of struggling to help him, he now lives a happy and less stressful life thanks to the various techniques I've acquired.

My dog training career started when I completed an internship with a local trainer. During the internship I noticed that sometimes the challenge was helping the dog owners overcome psychological barriers that were creating roadblocks to successful training. Inspired by my interest in how our thoughts and emotions can affect our pets, I obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology at the University of Oregon. While studying for my degree I met my future husband Daniel and he fell in love with little Black Jack who accompanied me to all my classes. Since then I have continued to expand my knowledge through research, interviews with trainers, and online courses. My passion for animals extends beyond just dogs, I also have 10+ years of experience training horses, mules, and donkeys.

My Philosophy

I firmly believe that every dog and owner require a unique, personalized and creative approach when it comes to training techniques. I believe success comes from having a variety of tools in your tool belt and using the right combination for each dog and owner. I always start by assessing the dog's temperament and conducting an in-depth consultation to figure out which method will be most effective not just for the dog, but also for the owner. I take into consideration my client's personality tendencies as well as any physical limitations or disabilities. Once training begins, I remain open to changing and adjusting the strategy until we find the most effective path.

I have a variety of different philosophies which I draw on, including:

  • Positive reinforcement/clicker training

  • Psychology (as it applies to the animal/human relationship)

  • Pack leader philosophy

I believe the core of every relationship is love, and this is very evident in our relationships with our pets. Sometimes dogs don't understand our human expressions of love because dog communication is different from ours. I show my clients how to communicate with their dog in a language they can understand and facilitate trust by recognizing and acknowledging their dog's reactions. I also explain how dogs pick up on human emotions including anxiety, anger and fear and I teach my clients how to change their thoughts and emotions in order to communicate calmly and effectively with their dogs.
